ROYEL OTIS, 2024

Glory to Glory Tour

The Big Prawn

When presented with the opportunity to create something unique, it’s best not to question the idea and just go for it. That’s how Royel Otis ended up with an 11-foot tall, 14-foot wide prawn on stage. The concept of a large prawn surprised our team and we were overjoyed with an opportunity to flex our custom sculpture skillset.  Royel Otis claims it is the second largest prawn in the world, and we agree.

Process Details

To support the large size of the prawn, we incorporated an aluminum frame for durability and transportability, allowing it to break down into various pieces. While the frame was being constructed, the prawn was hand-carved using CNC templates to maintain its shape. After the foam pieces were integrated with the metal frame, they were coated with spray plastic for touring durability.

The Big Prawn was painted to mirror the first-largest. Royel Otis’s scenic piece was mounted on a steel cart for ease of movement and a lower center of gravity. The prawn travels on two carts between shows.
